📣 COMING JUNE 23, 2026 📣

At Long Last…

The cover is set, the release date is fixed, and the fun is just beginning.

Just in time for the 250th Anniversary of the United States: My latest book, Obstinate Daughters: The Rebels, Writers, and Renegade Women Who Ignited the American Revolution (Dutton, 2026) arrives in bookstores June 23, 2026. It refocuses the true story of America’s founding, revealing the courageous, resourceful women whose actions shaped a nation. From the battlefields to the printing press, from the plantations to the pulpit, these women fought, spied, published, preached, farmed, and organized. Together, they turned the tide. It’s the story of the American Revolution—just not the one you were taught in history class. Throughout the book, I travel to historic sites to examine the legacies of some of these women—or in some cases, the lack thereof.

This book, my latest narrative nonfiction history, has been in my life for years. Letting go of projects remains one of the most challenging things about being a writer. There is always another paragraph to massage, phrase to tweak, juicy tidbit to insert, darling to kill. The one thing that helps keep me going is knowing that I get to share powerful stories that deserve attention, and that have come to mean the world to me.

And sometimes I get to share them in person!

If you’d like to see me in your neck of the woods, visit your local bookstore and let them know. Not all stores host live events, but those that do will know how to put in a request with my publisher. If you’re curious about independent bookstores in your area, check out Indiebound.org.

About That Title…

Meet “Miss Carolina Sulivan, one of the obstinate daughters of America, 1776.”

Without getting into too much detail here (though I do in the book), at the end of June 1776, the British made a failed attempt to take the valuable port city of Charles Town.

It did not go well.

One of the best ways the newspapers in London saw to shame the failed military undertaking was to depict the rebellious American colonies as a woman, hair adorned with flags and ordnance.

The Cutting Room Floor and More

Enjoy satirical cartoons like Miss Sulivan above? I sure do. I have been sharing these and more since October 27, when I embarked on an ambitious plan to post tidbits of my research for the 250 days leading up to July 4, 2026.

Sometimes it’s information I couldn’t manage to include. Sometimes it’s a curiosity I’ve come across since I wrapped the book. And sometimes it’s me, on the road in the former 13 colonies, having nerdy adventures.

Want to check it out? Want to play along? Have something to share?

I do most of my posting on Bluesky, Instagram, LinkedIn, and my Facebook page. Feel free to repost or tag or forward or whatever else you may feel social-media-ly inspired to do.

I promise at least one photo of me in a pillory.

American Bruno

Bruno is looking forward to the Fourth of July, but that's because he doesn’t know that I will be on the road. Although, I have to think he would make a handsome escort to any reading.

🌟 Until next time…🌟

This can be a stressful stretch of the year for a lot of folks. I hope you all can find a little peaceful time to yourselves, to take a deep breath, take a walk, or dig into a good book.
